parade

We are looking forward to a grandkid filled weekend. We or I should say Penny is keeping Corey tomorrow night. Miss Keaton called this evening to see if she could spend the night this weekend. Penny told her she could stay Saturday night, I’m sure Braxton will be over also. You can’t let one without the other.

Got a knock on my front door yesterday, two women from the Hobbs Jacees asked me if I would mind signing a petition allowing them to block off our street for Saturdays Christmas parade. They took me seriously when I told them NO !!! I had to call them back and tell them I was kidding. We live behind a shopping center and the parade lines up and starts about a half a block east of our front door. For years and years we had problems with people parking their vehicles in our driveway or blocking us in where we couldn’t get our car out. After years of complaining they finally started putting up a barricade at the intersection just west of our house during the parade. It sure saves on idiots blocking us in. Makes it nice for our family too, they can come to our house before the parade and walk a short distance to enjoy it.

ebay vs baby boomes

A few weeks ago I was looking at these little plastic mangers on ebay. I remember hanging them on our Christmas tree when I was a kid and thought I would get one to remind me of the good old days. Little did I know that these things sell like hotcakes on ebay. I guess everyone else had the same idea. Some of  Manger the ones I was watching sold for $15.00 or more. My wife says it’s the baby boomers. I guess she’s right. I’ve got my eye on a few more, maybe I can snag one pretty cheap. I never dreamed they were that popular. I’ve been buying a few Candy Cane Whitman Christmas puzzles that were made in the 50’s and 60’s. Some of them sell for $50.00 or more. I try and get the ones for less than $5.00 They are neat little puzzles the graphics are awesome, they take me back to what I consider the good ole days. And the grandkids enjoy playing with them.

Thought I would try my hand at playing with pictures tonight. If did this right you should be able to click on them and be taken to a bigger picture. I want to thank Marcia and JustAl for their help.

50%

Work was every bit as I expected. I was 10 days behind on paperwork and had 1001 things thrown in my direction all at once.  I survived and I even got to go out in the field on a job today. We are two operators short my boss fired one and the other is on vacation. So the odds of me getting out in field more went up 50%. I’m excited I can make more money working in the field than I can sitting at a desk in the office. This is the time of year when we can all use a little extra money.

My boss fired a young operator a couple of weeks before I went on vacation. He was really a good guy and was making a real good operator but he went through a divorce in February and then fell off the deep end. He started staying out all night drinking and pretty soon it started to have an effect on his daily performance. He was given a ton of chances to get his act together but he kept coming to work drunk. You can’t be on 24 hour call and be expected to drive a company vehicle hauling explosives drunk or with alcohol in your system. My boss finally got all he could take and let him go.

Sort of drawing a blank tonight. Hope my friends that are feeling bad start feeling better soon. It’s a bummer to be ill during the holiday season.

back to work

I guess these last few days of go go go has pretty much sucked the life out of our house today. I got up at 7:00 this morning and planted my butt in my recliner, read the morning paper then slept until 11:00. When Penny got home from church she pretty much did what I did all morning. I got out of the house around 3:30 and went to the shop to fuel up my pickup, I didn’t want to stand out in the freezing cold in the morning doing it. At least I can say I did something productive today. It’s been nice kicking back these last 10 days but tonight I go back on call and as bad as I hate to admit it I’m ready. Sitting at home isn’t for me.

I was looking for a good picture of Santa to use as a wallpaper today and stumbled across this site, if you have a few minutes to kill it’s worth a peek. People sent in pictures of their kids sitting in Santa’s lap scared to death. In a few of them it looks like Santa stayed out a little too late parting with the elves.

decorating

It looks like Christmas exploded in our house. We have been decorating all day long and I’m glad to say it’s pretty much over.  Penny will be fine tuning things for a few days but all the hard stuff is done. I bought a couple of Santa prints and we had to get frames for them. This one is my favorite it’s done by Myles Pinkney, after two trips to Hobby Lobby last night we finally got it framed and hung on the wall. Too pooped to write much more. I’ll be untangling strings of Christmas lights in my dreams tonight.

Christmas Tree

Over the hill and through the woods. Today we went shopping for a Christmas tree. Every year we put up a real tree and ever year it seems that there are less and less places to buy one. We used to have two nurserys, the boy scouts, Kmart, Walmart, and a few people that set up tree stands on a vacant lot to pick from. Now we have Home Depot and Walmart. There is a nursery that sells real trees but they are still alive and you have to plant them. Not any tree will do either, we like a Colorado Blue Spruce. We went to Walmart first and just as we pulled up the garden center they were closing the gate. We asked if we could buy a tree yet and the two ladies said we could buy one but we would have to carry it out through the store. I would of been able to walk around in the garden center but going through the store would be to much for me so Penny went in on her own. She said when she got to the garden center the same ladies didn’t want to let her go outside and look at the trees, something about company policy. She went out anyway but decided she wouldn’t lug a tree all the way back through the store. We left there and went to Home Depot, they didn’t have the type of tree we liked. We went on to the nursery but they didn’t have any fresh cut trees. So we drove 30 miles east of Hobbs to Seminole Tx. The Walmart in Seminole is a small store so naturally they didn’t have any trees. We drove around town and couldn’t find any place selling trees. We ate lunch at Dairy Queen and asked the ladies working there if there was any place in town that sold Christmas trees. NEWS FLASH You can’t buy a Christmas tree in Seminole Tx. Penny tried to get me to head north toward Lubbock Tx. but that wasn’t going to happen. On the way back to Hobbs I looked up Walmart’s phone number and gave the store manager a call, he was nice as pie and told me to ask for a manager when we got back. We talked it over and decided to give them another chance. The gate at the garden center was still locked when we got back so Penny went in through the store. There were different people working in the garden center and nice as pie. Penny picked out her tree and they opened the gate and loaded it in the truck for us.

Thanksgiving was a big hit at our house, we had a house full with plenty of good food to go around. My smoked turkey was just right. This was the first year for me to try the brining method before I smoked it. I believe it added juice to the meat. There were a few other experiments that didn’t go over as well. We tried a sweet potato dish with baked banana’s that we saw on the Food Network, it was alright but tasted too much like banana bread. I missed the melted marsh mellows on top of the old sweet potato dish. Our son tried a new green bean dish but even he wouldn’t eat them. Other than those two dishes everything else was a hit.

smokin

A long day of turkey smoking is finally over. Got up at 6:00 this morning got the fire started and had the turkey on by 7:30. About 9:00 I put 6 racks of baby back rigs on the smoker and let them smoke until 11:00 then I switched them over to the bbq grill and finished cooking them there. I marinated the turkey overnight in a brine solution and did the ribs for a couple of hours this morning. If the turkey is as good as the ribs were it will be a hit.

Hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving

links

Not much happened in our house today. I pretty much goofed off all day. I did some laundry ( stop laughing ) I didn’t shrink anything or mix any color shirts with white socks.

Keaton turned 6 today so we just got home from a house full of screaming 6 year olds. Had a good time but dang little girls can pierce your ear drums with their shrill screams.

I finally figured out how to do a link to a website today, your going to be sorry now. Last year about this time a friend sent me an email with instructions. I finally learned how to do it. I told you I don’t know jack about websites. Now if someone would step up to the plate and tell me how to insert a thumbnail in your blog so when you click on it the picture gets bigger.

chili

If I don’t write in my blog tomorrow someone call 911. I made chili for supper tonight, I used Emerils recipe. A few weeks ago I was watching his show and the chili he made looked pretty good. I’ve been wanting to make it ever since then. I tried to follow the directions but I couldn’t find the measuring spoons so I used a pinch of this and a dash of that. I made sure to go *BAM* when I added to garlic. It turned out pretty good and so far there have been no reported cases of stomach cramps. Will freeze the leftovers they will taste pretty good come Saturday. By the way I found the measuring spoons when I was looking for a measuring cup to add splenda to the tea pitcher tonight.

Took the grandkids to school today, they stopped by for a short visit last night. Keaton wanted to spend the night, so to help her leave without crying I promised to take her to school this morning. My son called this morning before I got out of the house and wanted to know if I would mind taking Braxton to preschool. Since I was taking his sister to school he wanted his papa to take him too. Of course I didn’t mind. They got a kick out of it.

Nettie I’m sorry for rubbing our warm weather in you face yesterday, our extended forecast for Thursday and Friday is snow.
